Each zone is determined by water exposure, and how much water protection a light fixture installed there needs to have. When purchasing a light for the bathroom, you need to ensure that you select a light fitting with the correct IP rating for the bathroom zone in which it’s going to be placed in. IP (or ‘Ingress” or “International Protection” as they are commonly known) ratings are used to define the level of protection offered against intrusion with electrical enclosures.

• Zone 0 – Zone 0 is in the bath or shower cubicle. Any fitting used in this zone needs to be entirely waterproof (be rated at least IP67) and must have a very low voltage (maximum 12v).
• Zone 1 – This is the space up to 2.25 metres above the bath or shower from the floor. Although IP65 is recommended, a minimum level of IP45 is necessary in this zone.
• Zone 2 – Zone 2 is a space that extends 0.6 metres outside the bath’s perimeter and rises 2.25m above the ground. An IP rating of at least IP44 is necessary in this zone. Additionally, it is good practice to consider the area around the washbasin to also be in Zone 2 when it is within a 60cm radius of any tap.

• Outside Zones – Anywhere outside Zones 0, 1, and 2 (subject to certain restrictions) and where it is likely that no water jet will be used is considered Outside Zones. Although there are no specific IP requirements in this area, it is advised that you install lights with a least an IP20+ rating.
